About us
As an organised religious community, the Swiss Federation for Hinduism in Switzerland was founded in Winterthur in 2017. Although Hinduism is one of the oldest world religions with more than 1 billion followers worldwide, it was not "officially" represented at all before. Today's collective term "Hinduism" stands for all the various currents and traditions that have originated on the Indian subcontinent over the past three to five thousand years. We Hindus ourselves describe our religion as "Sanatana Dharma", which means "eternal law" or "eternal order". Hinduism is enormously diverse in terms of the beliefs, theology practices and lifestyles of its various traditions. This is also true of Hinduism and Hindus in Switzerland.
Because of this religious and cultural diversity, the need for an umbrella organisation for Hinduism became necessary. In a meeting of about 50 founding members, including a dozen representatives of Hindu temples and communities, the "Swiss Federation of Hinduism SDH" was launched. The SDH has now become an umbrella for about 60,000 Hindus from different communities, groupings, traditions, temples and countries or nationalities. We are also embedded internationally: We are a member of the Hindu Forum of Europe HFE and represents Hinduism, for example, at the Vatican's "Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue".
We would like to become a very active member of the interreligious and intercultural scene in Switzerland. In this way we can contribute to peace and prosperity in Swiss society.
